Hillyfields Easter Saturday 2007

Hillyfields Park will be buzzing with activity on Easter Saturday. The Friends of Hillyfields are holding a fun day with Easter egg hunts, live music, sport activities for everybody etc.
A team of artists from Serpentina Creations will be holding art workshops from 12 noon to 3 pm. All materials will be provided but please wear old clothes! Children, teenagers and adults can all join in.
Activities on the day will include:

Egg painting

Traditional hard-boiled eggs to be painted with food colouring and we can give them eggbox ‘nests’ to take them home in! A large bowl made from recycled materials, and decorated with low VOCs paint and varnish will be used to store the eggs at the event.

Jewellery making

Julian Robinson is a jewellery maker and he is interested in showing the children (and adults) how to make items to wear eg brooches, badges etc. Lots of beads will be pre-made (from paper mache and other waste items) and the children can colour these and string them with recycled string. Fittings will be new and purchased for the event from a jewellery supplier.

Plant pots

Using yogurt pots, margarine cartons, ice-cream containers, old plant pots, jars etc children (and adults) can paint their designs and then we can give them a plant to put in it. Seedlings (tomatoes, flowers etc) will be planted prior to the day and distributed on the day. Tomatoes are easy to grow and just need sunshine and watering. If Saxon Way would like to ask parents to ‘donate’ old containers that can be used as planters in the school, the artists would love to do this as part of the day’s activities too.

Frames, pictures and mobiles

We will make them from cardboard, CDs etc. We did this at a workshop with Medway Tenants Day last June and it was a great success. People used frames to put photographs in and some painted a picture to put in the frame they made. Mobiles made from CDs, takeaway packaging and ingenuity! It also makes people think about what they put in their bins and how some if it can be recycled back into useful and attractive items for their homes.

Painting old t-shirts

People are invited to come with an old t-shirt / shirt and we will help them to brighten it up (or they can paint their own using paints we supply).

Notebooks

We have lots of recycled paper from old Full Circle catalogues and these can be pre-stapled and the children can design covers for them and then take the books home. We will also make a Visitor’s Book for people to add comments about the day which will provide very useful feedback to the Friends of Hillyfields.
